Sober Living

Battling an addiction is a difficult process that can often last a lifetime. However, anyone can achieve sober living on a permanent basis if they're willing to work towards that goal and are willing to make the changes necessary. It may not be as easy as one would like, but of course the end results are worth it.

Here are some quick tips to finally achieve sober living in your case. And of course you want to consider these tips in harmony with advice given by your doctor or counselor to be sure you have the most success.

Make a List

Why is sober living so important to you? What are you trying to accomplish by staying clean and sober? Whatever it means to you, write it down and keep that list close. You may write out how you want to stay sober for the sake of your children or career. Include health concerns and how you simply enjoy being sober.

Write out what your addiction and abuse of alcohol has also cost you. This might include the damage done to relationships, loss of jobs, financial ruin, and so on. If you've been arrested for drunk driving or had run-ins with the law because of your drinking, write out how you want to avoid that in the future.

When you make lists like this, you can remind yourself constantly of why sober living is so important and the benefits you can derive from staying sober. You know what you're fighting for, and what's at stake.

Take Time to Appreciate

Often when one starts to experience sober living, they take for granted everything they have when they begin to crave that alcohol again. So, take time to appreciate what you gain by staying sober. It might be something as simple as a good conversation with your spouse or children. It might be waking up without a hangover or the ability to earn a paycheck without worrying about losing your job because of drinking.

Appreciating the facets of sober living that you enjoy will make it more difficult for you to give them up in exchange for returning to your old habits. You'll realize that fighting to stay sober is worth every effort since it means being able to do these things that you enjoy.

Listen to Advice for Sober Living

Most people have a hard time taking advice, and when it comes to sobriety, there is much advice to heed! But it's important to listen to the advice of those that have struggled with addiction, as well as the advice given by your doctor, counselor, and so on.

Following their advice will mean a quicker recovery and the ability to maintain sober living permanently. As painful as it might be, their criticisms are meant to help you overcome your addiction and stay in control for a lifetime. So listen to their advice and do what they say so you can have the most success with sobriety.
